Raiders Use 2nd First-Round Pick on Ohio State Cornerback
The Las Vegas Raiders had two picks in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft and took wide receiver Henry Ruggs with the No. 12 overall pick. Fans can debate that selection, but there is no arguing Ruggs was a top receiver prospect this year.
The surprise from the Raiders came when the team drafted Ohio State defensive back Damon Arnette at No. 19 overall. The analysts on the ESPN broadcast appeared a bit shocked and shared that Arnette had a second or third-round grade on most boards. However, the Raiders don't pick again until the third round, and clearly coveted Arnette throughout the entire process.
Arnette appeared in 11 games for the Buckeyes last season and recorded one interception. Jeff Okudah, the No. 3 overall pick, took the spotlight at Ohio State, but Arnette did enough to be a top 10 corner. He was obviously more than that in the eyes of the Raiders organization, even if the move is seen as a major reach.
Arnette not having a first-round grade in the eyes of many will define this selection. The Raiders will either be seen as geniuses, or the move will be seen as the latest draft debacle in franchise history.
