3 Raiders Veterans Who Could Be Cut After NFL Draft
By Scott Rogust
The Las Vegas Raiders only have seven picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, but they're extremely top-heavy. They have two in the first round and three in the third, which almost ensures they'll have five quality players added to their roster for their debut in Sin City.
Of course, those selections will come at the expense of some veteran players already on the Raiders roster. Here are three that could be cut after the NFL Draft.
3. LB Marquel Lee
The linebacker position in Las Vegas was significantly improved this offseason with the additions of Cory Littleton and Nick Kwiatkowski. Even so, the Raiders are projected to select a linebacker with their 20th overall pick, with Kenneth Murray and Patrick Queen likely to still be on the board by then. If that's the case, the Raiders need to make room on their relatively crowded depth chart. Marquel Lee is entering the final year of his contract, and carries under $1 million in dead money if released. That's a decision the Raiders will likely consider, especially since Lee hasn't really flashed during his time with the organization.
2. WR Zay Jones
Las Vegas' first pick on draft night is at the No. 12 spot, and it's no secret that the team is craving a speedy receiver to add to their offensive arsenal. They're in prime position to take either CeeDee Lamb or Henry Ruggs III, which means a wide receiver on the roster has to go. Zay Jones did show promise at the start of his career with the Buffalo Bills, but once he got traded to the Raiders, he was a non-factor on offense. With an incoming rookie pairing alongside Tyrell Williams and Hunter Renfrow, Jones is an easy cut, considering his 2020 salary is non-guaranteed and he carries $0 in dead money.
1. QB DeShone Kizer
The Raiders quarterback room is perhaps the strangest in the entire league. Derek Carr has essentially maintained (unofficial) residence on the trading block and the team added former second overall pick Marcus Mariota. Even so, there's a belief that the Raiders could take a signal caller in the first round, with Jordan Love being the name heavily linked to the rumor. If that's the case, one quarterback on the depth chart has got to go, and it should be Deshone Kizer. The former Notre Dame alum shined in college, but he's been unable to make an impact with the time he's gotten in the NFL. He'll be gone if the Raiders take a QB.
