Rajai Davis' Uber Driver is Latest Unsung Hero for the Mets After Clutch Home Run
By Austin Pert
Despite the often-glacial pace of the game, baseball players can live hectic lives if they're at the roster margins. Spicing up the day-to-day monotony of 162-game seasons, dramatic mid-game trades or call-ups can send players in races against time to get between any two given spots in the country at a moment's notice.
So when Rajai Davis learned that he had been called up from Triple-A Syracuse to the big league New York Mets, he had to get from Allentown, PA -- where his minor league club was playing Wednesday night -- to Queens in New York in as little time as possible. Insert Uber and driver Jason Clinton to the rescue.
The 112-mile trip between Coca-Cola Park in Allentown to Citi Field took two hours and cost $234. But it got Davis to his new club in the third inning, still early enough to leave time for an unforgettable moment.
Such a moment would come in the eighth inning, when the outfielder pinch hit with Juan Lagares and Wilson Ramos on base. Having fouled off three pitches to stay alive in a 2-2 count, Davis ripped a four-seamer and sent it screaming into the left-field bleachers. He became just the 11th Met in franchise history to homer in his first at-bat with the team, and in doing so, gave his brand new squad a 6-1 lead that would hold through the final out.
Davis' return to big league baseball exceeded expectations, after he inked a minor-league contract with the Mets this past offseason. He had patiently waited in Syracuse for his chance to be called back up to The Show, and boy, did he take advantage of the opportunity Wednesday night.
But we can't forget the heroism of the Uber driver here.
