Rams' Cap Situation is a Disaster and We Don't Know How They're Going to Sign Their Draft Class
By Scott Rogust
The Super Bowl hangover is real for the Los Angeles Rams, who have invested all of their money in all the wrong places. We knew the Rams were in cap hell, but we didn't think it'd be this bad, based off this latest update.
As of this writing, the Rams have -$6.21 million in cap space just a handful of days before the upcoming NFL Draft.
How on Earth are the Rams going to be able to sign their 2020 draft class? Is that even possible at this point?
They have seven draft picks this year, but won't have one in the first, thanks in part to their trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Most of their lack of money to spend is due to signing quarterback Jared Goff to his massive four-year, $134 million contract extension
Goff proved to be an above-average quarterback, but due to the ever-increasing price tag for signal callers, the Rams had to cough up serious coin. Last season, Goff regressed, and now counts for $36 million against the cap in 2020, the highest charge in the entire league. Luckily for them, Goff said he'd be open to restructure his contract, which would help them immensely.
Look, the Rams knew they were on the cusp of greatness, and wanted to lock in their best players to make a run for the Lombardi Trophy. Those aspirations are pretty much dead now, and they'll have to find some way, any way to free up some cap space, with the NFL Draft taking place this Thursday.
