Rams GM Les Snead Says No Timeline on Jalen Ramsey Contract Extension Then Immediately Walks it Back
By Scott Rogust
The Los Angeles Rams made a huge splash on Tuesday evening. The team traded away Marcus Peters to the Baltimore Ravens, and received an immediate upgrade in Jalen Ramsey, who's suddenly their new No. 1 cornerback.
What does loom over the deal -- besides the loss of their next two first-round draft picks -- is Ramsey's contract, which runs out following the 2020 season. And while speaking with the media on Wednesday, Rams general manager Les Snead mentioned the idea of giving Ramsey a contract extension-- only to take a step back from that idea almost immediately
“No, no timeline on that,” Snead told reporters Tuesday. “We did put a timeline a little bit in place with it. I don’t want to give too many details on that. Again, we are just meeting Jalen today. Obviously. He to date has earned a chance to probably get a nice contract for the job he does and the position he plays.”
Snead said there was no timetable on a deal, before saying he doesn't want to reveal too much. So, Les, which is it? A little slip of the tongue there, perhaps.
A contract agreement with Ramsey will prove to be tricky. Quarterback Jared Goff's massive four-year, $134 million extension kicks in at the conclusion of the 2020 season, exactly when Ramsey is set to hit free agency.
If Ramsey is looking to become the highest-paid cornerback in the league as he'll surely demand, you'd have to look at the contract given to Xavien Howard of the Miami Dolphins. Ramsey and his agent should aim to exceed Howard's five-year, $75.25 million deal. It's simply a matter of whether it will come from the Rams or some other team.
As of now, it's too early to talk about a new deal for Jalen Ramsey, as the Rams will look to get him on the field, which could come as soon as this Sunday against the Falcons.
