When football fans across the country saw Clay Matthews jogging to the Los Angeles Rams' locker room in the fourth quarter on Thursday night, they were left confounded because the broadcast booth didn't follow up with an explanation.

Well, the feedback came through Friday evening, and the results were less than ideal for defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.

Matthews is expected to miss at least month of action with a broken jaw, which he will undergo surgery for in the coming days, reports Gary Klein of the LA Times.

The month-long timetable would mean that the six-time Pro Bowler would miss the Rams' next three games since the team is slated for a bye in Week 9.

Matthews being shelved is a significant blow for LA's defense as the 33-year-old has thrived in the early stages of his first season under Phillips' scheme. He's started all five games thus far and has compiled 19 combined tackles, six sacks, and two forced fumbles.

It appears as though the USC product suffered the injury while attempting to make a diving tackle on Seahawks tailback Chris Carson. Here's footage of Matthews' last play from Thursday night:

Injuries are just the last thing that the Rams defense need as they've surrendered a combined 85 points in their last two games.

As for Matthews, let's hope that he recovers swimmingly and is able to return within the expected timetable.
