Sean McVay Somehow Once Beat Out Calvin Johnson for High School Player of the Year
By Scott Rogust
Sean McVay took the NFL by storm once he introduced his innovative offensive scheme as the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams. In fact, the 34-year-old sideline boss already has his own coaching tree! Not only is McVay a great head coach, but he was also a damn good football player in high school.
Back in 2003, McVay actually won the Georgia State Player of the Year award ... over former Detroit Lions star wide receiver Calvin Johnson!
Before he transitioned into coaching, McVay was an electric dual-threat quarterback for Marist High School. In 2003, he led Marist to the Class 4A state championship on a 14-1 record and rushed and threw for over 1,000 yards. In fact, that was the second consecutive season in which he put up those statistics, becoming the first player in school history to accomplish the feat.
Meanwhile, Johnson caught 40 passes for 820 yards and eight touchdowns for Sandy Creek High School. That's pretty good for the former 5-star recruit.
Despite not winning the Offensive Player of the Year award, Johnson had a successful playing career. He became a star at Georgia Tech before being selected second overall by the Lions in the 2007 NFL Draft. As for McVay, he converted to a wide receiver at Miami (OH) University before transitioning into coaching.
Let it be known that McVay actually holds bragging rights over the man football fans called "Megatron."
