Random MLB Writer Trolls Yankee Fans Everywhere With Derek Jeter-Less Hall of Fame Ballot
"Derek Jeter isn't a first ballot MLB Hall of Famer," said likely no one, ever.
At least, if they've paid attention to baseball since the turn of the millennium, they likely don't hold this opinion.
But hey, different strokes for different folks, and some people like to set themselves apart from the fray. Regardless, whether you're a Yankee lifer or absolutely despise the pinstripes, a Hall of Fame ballot without the Captain's name being checked on it has to be some sort of baseball treason.
Hall of Fame ballots for 2020 are required to be turned in to the Baseball Writers' Association by December 31, but one writer decided to bless the fans with an early Christmas gift; posting his "completed" ballot on to social media on Christmas Eve in an effort to freak out the entirety of New York.
Among the names checked: Todd Helton, Larry Walker, Omar Vizquel. But no Derek Jeter? A few of the names, like Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, are nearing their expirations on the ballot, and for good reason -- they've been marred with doping scandals since they left the league. Others had good careers, no doubt; Walker was a 1997 NL MVP, Sheffield belted over 500 home runs, and Vizquel racked up 11 Gold Glove awards. None had a tenure quite like Jeter's though.
Hence why, amid hundreds of replies from fans in the minutes after his post, said writer updated fans with his actual ballot -- perhaps from fear of being outed amongst the baseball community forever, had he waited any longer.
Glad we don't live in a world where 14 All-Stars, five World Series, and owning the month of November don't get you into the Hall of Fame on your first try. And thank you, Felix, for stopping the hearts of the MLB collective with your trolled ballot. Glad to see your sanity is still intact when it comes to the game of baseball.
Who's gonna be the first attention-seeker not to vote for Jeter, though? Someone's gonna do it!
