Rangers Hire 34-Year-Old Ex-Cub Darwin Barney as Triple-A Manager
By Scott Rogust
The Texas Rangers overhauled all aspects of their organization, and that includes the farm system. Now they have a new skipper in the highest level of the minors.
In a team press release, the Rangers announced they've hired former Chicago Cubs infielder Darwin Barney as the new manager for the Triple-A Nashville Sounds. This will be the first managerial gig for Barney, who's just 34 years old.
Barney is not the only former player in their 30s to manage in the Rangers organization. Not too long ago, the team hired former journeyman catcher Bobby Wilson as the skipper for the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders.
The ex-infielder's career lasted for eight seasons, including stints with the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays. Barney joined the Rangers back in 2018 on a minor-league deal, but was released shortly before the start of that season. He subsequently called it quits afterwards.
Throughout his career, Barney hit .246 with a .635 OPS, 31 home runs and 201 RBI. His lone award came in 2012, where he won a Gold Glove with the Cubs.
