Rangers Place Slugger Joey Gallo on IL With Oblique Strain
By Charles Nason
Texas Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo was placed on the 10-day IL earlier on Sunday with an oblique strain. Gallo left Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals in the fifth inning.
From the outfield to the on-deck circle, Gallo experienced tightness in his left oblique that led to an MRI and strength tests after his early exit.
The 25 year-old has been on fire this year up to this point. With 50 games played this season, Gallo finds himself in the top five among league leaders in home runs (17), on-base percentage (.421), slugging percentage (.653), and OPS (1.074).
Gallo blasted a two-run shot earlier in the game against the Royals for his 17th home run of the year. The Rangers have called up outfielder Delino DeShields from Triple-A Nashville with Gallo out of the lineup.
If he stays on the IL for the full 10 days, Gallo will miss the entirety of the Rangers' series against the Orioles and Athletics. Although the Rangers have set no official timetable for Gallo's return, placing him on the 10-day IL means they'd ideally have him back in time for a four-game series with the Red Sox.
