Rangers Reportedly Interested in Red Sox Starting Pitchers Such as David Price and More
By Chris Pyo
After a disappointing season, the Boston Red Sox are planning to slash their payroll, meaning that they're going to have to find some way to offload a couple of massive contracts, including David Price's hefty $32 million annual salary.
Well, Boston's payroll issues have piqued the interest of the Texas Rangers, who are reportedly in the early stages of pursuing various Red Sox pitchers including Price, Nathan Eovaldi, or even Chris Sale via trade.
One year removed from a World Series championship, Boston's rotation was horrific for them this year, with Price going 7-5 with a 4.28 ERA while dealing with multiple injuries. Sale was even worse, as he went 6-11 with an uncharacteristically high ERA of 4.40 after he had never logged an ERA north of 3.41 in a season.
However, the Rangers' rotation was even more depleted, as only four of their starters logged more than 80 innings this past season. Their team ERA was 5.06 for the season, and they entered the offseason in desperate need of some starting pitching.
If the Red Sox choose to ship any of these huge-name pitchers off to the Rangers, their intention of slashing their payroll will be realized, signifying that it may be time for a rebuild. Meanwhile, the Rangers will continue to try and bolster their roster in order to compete in a difficult AL West with the Astros and Mariners.
Ladies and gentlemen, it's officially the MLB offseason.
