Rangers Sign Former Rays Infielder Matt Duffy on a Minor-League Deal
By Karl Rasmussen
The Texas Rangers continued their offseason spending on Thursday, acquiring a veteran infielder off the open market.
Per Bob Nightengale, the Rangers have reached a deal with former Tampa Bay Rays middle infielder Matt Duffy.
Duffy will be on a minor-league contract worth $1 million, but he can earn an additional $1.5 million in incentives should he crack the major-league roster.
Injuries have slowed down Duffy's career a bit, as the 29-year-old only managed to feature in 46 games last year and missed the entire 2017 campaign after undergoing Achilles surgery.
Last year with Tampa, Duffy slashed .252/.343/.327 with one homer and 12 RBI. He's by no means a world-beater, but the former Cal State Long Beach product could make an impact for the Rangers if he stays healthy.
Duffy made a name for himself as a rookie with the San Francisco Giants back in 2015, when he finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting after slashing .295/.334/.428 with 12 home runs, 77 RBI and 12 steals across 149 games.
He'll hope to rediscover some of that form as he vies to crack the big-league roster in Arlington.
