Rangers' Willie Calhoun Diagnosed With Fractured Jaw After Being Hit by Julio Urias Fastball
A scary moment took place in Sunday's game Spring Training between the Texas Rangers and the Los Angeles Dodgers. A 95 mph heater from Julio Urias ran up and in and struck outfielder Willie Calhoun square in the face. Calhoun hit the ground in pain and was immediately tended to by the medical staff, subsequently being carted off the field.
After being taken to a hospital for further diagnosis, it turns out Calhoun suffered a pretty gruesome injury.
According to reports, Calhoun has been diagnosed with a fractured jaw and will undergo further evaluation on Monday.
A fractured jaw is a brutal injury. The only positive to take away is that he did not suffer any traumatic or career-threatening injuries from this freak accident. Further evaluation is still set to take place.
It's a devastating blow for the 25 year old and will likely sideline him for a significant amount of time.
Calhoun appeared in 83 games for the Rangers last season in his third season since being sent over from the Dodgers in the Yu Darvish trade. He slashed .269/.323/.524 with 21 home runs and 48 RBI in 2019 after finally carving out a decent sized role in the big leagues.
All everyone can hope for now is that Calhoun makes a full and speedy recovery and can rejoin the team before long.
