Raptors Head Coach Nick Nurse's Logic Regarding Timeouts is Completely Backward
By Max Scoli
The Golden State Warriors narrowly escaped Game 5 of the NBA Finals with a 106-105 victory on the road against the Raptors. Toronto only has one man to blame for this loss, and that man is head coach Nick Nurse.
In a completely boneheaded move, Nurse called a timeout while the Raptors were on a 10-2 run, leading the game by six with just over three minutes left to play. After killing the momentum with a timeout, Nurse watched his team get outscored 9-2 the rest of the game.
Here was his reasoning for calling the timeout:
"We had two free ones that you lose under the three-minute mark. And we just came across and just decided to give those guys a rest ... just thought we could use the extra energy push."
Is it the end of the world if you lose a timeout?
If your team is on a roll and controlling the outcome of the game on their home court, why on Earth would you disrupt the game and allow the Warriors a chance to re-strategize and take a breather?
Later, Nurse chose NOT to call a timeout during the Raptors' final possession with a chance to win the game. Instead, the Toronto's offense had no clear plan, leading to a tough shot by Kyle Lowry in a desperate attempt to beat the buzzer.
"I was confident we would come down and play and make the right decisions and get a good shot. I have a lot of faith in those guys," Nurse said when asked about why he would not call a timeout.
So if you draw up a play you don't have faith in your players? This is just all so confusing.
Toronto fans can only hope this lapse in judgement doesn't cost the Raps their first-ever NBA title.
