Raptors Outlast Warriors in Game 6 Thriller at Oracle to Win First-Ever NBA Title
By Sam Dunn
It yet another game that came down to the wire in this incredible series, the Toronto Raptors had the last laugh in the final game that will ever be played at Oracle Arena, outslugging the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors to earn a 114-110 victory in Game 6 of the NBA Finals to secure their first-ever championship.
The game went back and forth all night long, with the shorthanded Dubs, who got 30 points from Klay Thompson and a triple-double from Draymond Green, matching every Fred VanFleet triple (he was 5-11 from deep) and Pascal Siakam (26 points, 10 rebounds) inside attack with a perfectly placed couterpunch. But in the end, a pair of follies on both ends put a bizarre bow on this eye-popping series.
When Danny Green threw the ball away in the closing seconds thanks to some swarming defense by Draymond Green and Co., the hometown Warriors fans surely thought they had a perfect Oracle sendoff in the bag-- and a Game 7 in Toronto upcoming. Instead, after a spoiled possession and a missed Steph Curry three, the Dubs called timeout with 0.9 seconds left at midcourt.
They had no timeouts remaining.
What followed was a Kawhi Leonard technical free throw, plus a free inbounds pass for Toronto. When the dust had settled, the Kings in the North were NBA champions following their first-ever trip to the Finals.
What's to come next for this team isn't yet known. Kawhi, essentially a lock to win Finals MVP, capped a historic playoff run with 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists, and now enters free agency with a massive decision to make. He's already the greatest player in Raptors history, period. There is no argument to make against him. And after what he and his team achieved this year, the sky could be the limit as to what they could accomplish in the years to come.
In the meantime, however, it's party time in Jurassic Park.
