As the world continues to reel from the increasing effects of the COVID-19 virus, sports fans have witnessed a significant escalation of seriousness, as the NCAA followed suit with various European soccer leagues in announcing that its men's and women's basketball tournaments would also be played without fans -- and hours later, the NBA suspended its season.

Now, we have news out of Spain that concerns basketball on either side of the Atlantic. Trey Thompkins, a former Georgia Bulldogs and Los Angeles Clippers player now with Real Madrid, has tested positive.

Notably, Real Madrid is the team that previously employed Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic, and their soccer club is among the most iconic and valuable sporting organizations in the world. On Thursday, Spain's top two divisions of professional soccer announced that their seasons would be suspended for two match days.

Who is Trey Thompkins?

Thompkins, a 29-year-old forward listed at 6-9 , was born on Long Island and attended high school in the Atlanta suburbs. At the University of Georgia, he was voted First Team All-SEC in 2010 and went on to be drafted in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers.

Thompkins played two seasons in L.A. before relocating to Russian club Nizhny Novgorod. After one year, he moved to Real Madrid, where he's been since 2015, going on to win the Liga ACB, Spanish Cup, and EuroLeague title once each as Doncic's teammate.

There's clearly a stunning chain reaction of events in play here, and the reach cannot currently be known. For now, let us send our best to Trey Thompkins and Real Madrid as they navigate this next phase of the Coronavirus crisis.
