Red Sox 2019 Road Record Proves Defending Fenway Park Was a Major Problem This Year
By Chris Pyo
The 2019 Boston Red Sox were seriously underwhelming this season. So underwhelming, in fact, that there are legitimate talks proposing a massive cut to the team's payroll, meaning that they'd most likely lose the likes of J.D. Martinez to free agency and Mookie Betts to the...trade market? Say it isn't so.
So, what happened? Why did the Red Sox go from world domination to also-rans? Well...have you checked their home/road splits?
One huge factor to the Red Sox' demise a year removed from a World Series championship was their play at home, right at Fenway Park.
Yup, the Yankees (103-59) and the Red Sox (84-78) had the exact same road record this season. So why is there such a huge disparity between the two teams' overall records?
Well, the Yanks went 57-24 at home, while the Red Sox went 38-43. That's atrocious, and Red Sox fans really did suffer at Fenway this past season in a way that's almost impossible to believe.
Of course, there's more to uncover here. The Red Sox bullpen were 33-of-64 on prospective save opportunities. Apparently, the Red Sox couldn't close out games anywhere.
It's been a tough season for the Red Sox, but of course they can still claim to be defending champions for another month, until another team replaces them as baseball's best.
How on earth do you have such a poor season at home, with potentially the best home field advantage in the game? Just another mystery for the team's GM to solve...once they install one, that is.
