Ken Rosenthal Pretty Much Reveals How Irresponsible Red Sox Acted in Trade Talks With Twins
By Sean Facey

The Mookie Betts trade has been a rollercoaster ride ever since it was first announced that the Boston Red Sox even planned on shipping him out of town. When the full details of the apparent trade between themselves, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Minnesota Twins were initially reported, absolute pandemonium took hold.
But since then, talks have begun to slow down or even fall apart, with medical concerns over Twins prospect Brusdar Graterol looming largest in the proceedings.
Minnesota pulled out of the deal, leaving the train-wreck behind them, and noted MLB insider Ken Rosenthal perfectly summed up how the Red Sox have nobody to blame but themselves for the absolute mess they're in now.
More on #RedSox: They should not have been surprised Graterol might project as a reliever; that is how #MNTwins saw him. They also should not have been surprised that fans and media would react negatively to a trade of one of the game’s biggest stars, Mookie Betts.

None of the problems with this trade should have been even remotely surprising to them. Graterol had Tommy John surgery way back in 2016, and when he made his big league debut in 2019, he appeared exclusively as a reliever.
There was no reason to think that he'd project as a rotation arm. It's on the Red Sox for not doing their due diligence on the guy. Period.

Boston should have expected massive backlash from the fanbase over all this, too. Trading Betts is borderline egregious, all things considered. He's one of the most talented players the franchise has ever developed. No matter what they got in return for him, the baseball community would have rightfully been incensed with the move, as it sends a message that that Boston is something less than an ultimate destination for star players.
Real question is what #RedSox want. #MNTwins could send Graterol and lesser prospect to #Dodgers, then LAD could flip Graterol and a better prospect to BOS. But some in talks sense that negative media reaction to Verdugo-Graterol return for Betts-Price gave BOS ownership pause.

The fact that ownership reportedly put the brakes on the whole deal because of something as petty as public outcry over the allegedly unimpressive package they would have received proves how grossly incompetent John Henry and Co. have been over the course of this process.
The Red Sox were not prepared to make this deal. They didn't do their homework, and they're now paying the price.
