Red Sox Agree to Record-Breaking $27 Million Settlement With Mookie Betts Before Arbitration
By Michael Luciano
Boston Red Sox superstar Mookie Betts may not be in town much longer, but he's certainly making his mark on the team's financial ledger one last time before hitting free agency next offseason.
Betts agreed to a record-setting $27 million dollar one-year deal pre-arbitration that will make him one of the highest-paid outfielders in the league during his last year under team control.
Betts set an arbitration record with his $27 million payday, topping the old mark held by Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado.
Betts was not performing at his MVP level last year, but a season in which he hit .295 with 29 home runs and 80 RBI while once again playing excellent defense is enough to earn such a big contract.
Betts has been the subject of trade rumors this offseason, with the Dodgers in particular making a run at him, and at the very least, it's a positive sign that the two sides didn't have a monster arbitration argument before their final season together under these current terms.
Betts just got a pretty substantial payday, and the Red Sox fanbase should be overjoyed that Betts is currently in line to man right field in Boston, without one more screaming match.
