Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner Speaks About Dave Dombrowski Firing and Status of Alex Cora
By Michael Luciano

2019 was a bitterly disappointing year for the Boston Red Sox, as they failed to make the playoffs on the back of an extremely disappointing starting rotation that prompted the firing of GM Dave Dombrowksi as well as questions about Alex Cora's job security.
Team chairman Tom Werner said Friday that he wants to take his time in finding a GM that will give the team a great chance at competing in the near future.
Tom Werner on what Sox are looking for in new GM/timetable: ‘Moving forward, we thought that in order to be successful for the next five years, he had to improve in a lot of areas.’

Owner John Henry confirmed that Dombrowski, who assembled a World Series team in 2018, was "the right choice at the right time", but also wasn't a good fit for this current squad.
Henry: Dombrowski ‘was the right choice at the right time.’ Sox were unanimous when considering potential new deal that team isn’t in same situation now than when Dombrowski was hired.

Henry also stated that Cora will be back as manager in 2020 no matter who the team hires as GM.
Henry says Cora will be back regardless of who is hired.

Werner was clearly disappointed with how 2019 turned out, and is vowing that Boston will get back on the right track next year.
Werner: ‘We take responsibility for the overall direction of the club.’ But says Team believes it needs more homegrown depth coming through system.

It's hard to imagine a team with this much talent missing the playoffs two years in a row, so if Boston gets a GM who values pitching, unlike the short-sighted Dombrowski, then maybe Cora will have the guys he needs to turn this ship around and get back to the postseason.
