Red Sox Clubhouse Attendant Suspended After Allegations of Sexual Assault at Youth Detention Center
By Mark Powell
Disturbing news to report out of Boston, as a Red Sox clubhouse attendant has been suspended from the organization as he faces allegations of sexual assault at a youth detention center.
Stephen Murphy was charged with 26 counts of aggravated felonious assault in July.
“When we learned of the allegations against Stephen Murphy involving events that occurred prior to his Red Sox employment, he was suspended without pay from his position. We will have no further comment going forward,” a team spokesman told the Associated Press.
The disturbing act allegedly took place in the late 1990's, in which a teenage boy was raped repeatedly at a detention center in New Hampshire.
This, unfortunately, is not the lone time a Red Sox clubhouse member's been linked to a sexual assault crime. Retired Red Sox clubhouse manager Donald Fitzpatrick pleaded guilty to four counts of attempted sexual battery in Florida. All four victims were 12 years or younger.
Murphy denies any and all allegations against him, per a lawyer statement this July. We'll have more on this case as information becomes available.
