Red Sox DFA Eduardo Nuñez in Major Roster Shuffle
By Michael Luciano
With the Boston Red Sox still stuck in neutral in the middle of July, Alex Cora has decided to call up former top prospect Sam Travis to inject some life into their lineup. That comes, however, at the expense of Eduardo Nuñez.
The former All-Star infielder, who was sent to Boston in a 2017 deal with the San Francisco Giants, was DFA'd after an extremely disappointing 2019 campaign.
Nuñez got his start with the New York Yankees, but didn't take off as a player until he was traded to the Minnesota Twins. He mad an All-Star game in 2016, but was traded to the Giants at the deadline.
After hitting .279 with 18 home runs in his first year and a half with the Red Sox, Nuñez has been a catastrophe in 2019. His average has fallen to .228, and he has only hit two home runs. With an OPS+ of 42 and his usual subpar defense in the infield, Nuñez has worn out his welcome.
Nuñez's MLB career is likely not over, but his time as a key contributor on the Red Sox has come to a close.
