Red Sox Mascot Wally the Green Monster Owns Boston Beat Writer Over Silly Hat Question
By Jerry Trotta
For the most part, mascots of professional sporting franchises are national treasures and truly don't deserve anything but our love and respect. After all, they innocently go about their business with only one goal in mind: ratcheting up the energy and passion in the building and helping fans have a good time.
Well, don't tell that to Boston Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo, who was utterly flabbergasted after finding out that Wally the Green Monster's hat wasn't permanently attached to his head.
But... who cares? And who is Cotillo to say that Wally's bald scalp shouldn't catch some rays from the sun from time to time? It's Florida, after all, and those winters in Boston tend to be pretty oppressive.
Beantown natives won't have to rush to their beloved mascot's defense, however -- Wally did that himself by roasting Cotillo on Twitter with a perfect quote tweet.
Truer words have never been spoken!
Spring Training doesn't exactly ooze with headline-grabbing storylines the whole way through, but we certainly didn't expect -- at least not in this lifetime -- Wally the Green Monster to go scorched earth on a Red Sox writer on social media. This mascot is not to be messed with.
