Red Sox Name Former Reds Manager Jerry Narron Bench Coach
By Michael Luciano
The Boston Red Sox were so desperate for options to replace manager Ron Roenicke as bench coach that fans wanted them to pull Jason Varitek out of retirement.
Boston finally ended the search by bringing in an experienced candidate Roenicke is very familiar with. Jerry Narron, who spent the last three seasons as the bench coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks under Torey Lovullo, has been named to the same position with the Red Sox.
Narron got his start with the Baltimore Orioles, and has managed on two separate occasions, failing to last two seasons with the Texas Rangers in 2001 and 2002, and disappointing as interim manager of the Cincinnati Reds from June 2005 to July 2007. Narron also coached with the Red Sox in 2003.
Narron was the bench coach in Milwaukee from 2011 to 2015, when Roenicke was the club's manager. The Brewers won the NL Central in the duo's first year in charge, but they failed to top that season and were let go after 2015.
Narron, who was a candidate for the New York Mets job before Carlos Beltran began his illustrious tenure, is a baseball lifer who has been around the game forever and won at several destinations. Considering the options out there, Boston made a fantastic hire in Narron.
