Red Sox Official Says if Mookie Betts Wants to Stay in Boston Then Team Will 'Pay Him'
By Michael Luciano
Alarm bells went off in New England when reports stating the Boston Red Sox could actually trade superstar outfielder Mookie Betts if they couldn't agree on a long-term contract were first made public.
Luckily for the blood pressure of every Red Sox fan, an unnamed team official says that they will find a way to get Betts paid if he wants to stay in Boston.
"If Mookie wants to stay in Boston, we'll pay him," says the unnamed official. "We want him to be the face of the franchise. But it's hard to know. He's rejected our outreach in the past."
Betts has taken a step down from his MVP season in 2018, but remains an elite corner outfielder, as evidenced by his 4.7 WAR, 20 home runs and OPS+ of 125.
As bad as the Red Sox have been this season, they are one of the best teams in the league when healthy, and trading Betts would essentially be waving the white flag.
While Betts figures to be in Boston longterm, the rumblings of him possibly leaving are only getting louder, which isn't good for Alex Cora and the Sox.
