One of the most valued and underappreciated members of the Boston Red Sox family is currently recovering from brain surgery.

Mike Shalin, a veteran Boston Globe reporter who serves as the official scorer for Red Sox games, is currently in a rehab facility as he works his way back from an operation on his brain. This information was dropped in Sunday's Globe.

Shalin is known most prominently for his work with the Red Sox, but he is one of the most respected sports minds in the state of Massachusetts, as he has experience covering the New England Patriots as well. With bylines in the New York Post and the Boston Herald, Shalin is one of the few that has managed to bridge the New York/Boston divide and earn praise from both fans.

Simply put, Boston sports are better with Shalin in the picture.

The Fenway press box just wouldn't be the same without Shalin there to score Red Sox games. We wish he and his family the best as he starts his road to recovery.
