Red Sox and Padres Reportedly Discussed Potential Blockbuster Trade for Mookie Betts
By Sam Dunn
The baseball fans might get to experience some heat right here in the dead of winter. According to a new report from Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the San Diego Padres are emerging as a serious trade suitor for Red Sox outfielder and former AL MVP Mookie Betts, and the two sides have discussed the potential parameters for a mega-deal.
Well, then!
The Padres, who just one year ago signed star infielder Manny Machado for $300 million, reportedly discussed submitting a package to Boston including former All-Star Wil Myers and a significant prospect haul.
Notably, the Padres have one of the finest farm systems in all of baseball -- but Lin writes that a deal is not considered to be close at this time.
The Padres are far from the only suitor hoping to wrest Betts free from the Red Sox, but considering the player's desire to test free agency following the 2020 season, spending dearly only to see him walk after one season is a sincere risk any team has to take into account.
Keep an eye on San Diego as the hot stove cooks back up again.
