Red Sox Place Ryan Brasier on Bereavement List and Add Darwinzon Hernandez to Roster

On Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox placed right-handed reliever Ryan Brasier on the bereavement/family emergency list. The move comes to make room for Tuesday night's starter, left-handed pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez, though what exactly the emergency is remains unclear.

Hernandez, who is being recalled from Double-A, will be making his first career big league start. He was called up earlier this season and made his debut out of the bullpen with a scoreless outing.
In 10 appearances (nine starts) at Double-A, the 22-year-old southpaw posted a 1-4 record with a 5.13 ERA with 59 strikeouts over 40.1 innings. His issue has been free passes, as he owns a whopping 7.1 BB/9.
Ryan Brasier, Matt Barnes, Marcus Walden and Brandon Workman have a combined 2.42 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 11.26 K/9 in innings six through eight. In the ninth inning, they have a combined 4.32 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, and a 10.80 K/9. The ERA essentially doubles with the same guys.

Brasier has been struggling late in games for Boston, including Monday night against the Texas Rangers, where he surrendered the go-ahead run in the 11th inning.
In 31 appearances on the season, Brasier owns a 3.77 ERA and has 25 strikeouts over 28.2 innings. He's blown three saves this year, and over his last 15 innings pitched, he's posted a 6.00 ERA.
