Red Sox Place Steven Wright on IL to Clear Roster Space for Andrew Cashner

Red Sox reliever Steven Wright had an abysmal showing out of the bullpen during Saturday's loss to the Dodgers, surrendering three runs on three hits while recording only one out.

But, believe it or not, the poor cameo was actually the least of his concerns. The former All-Star was removed from the game upon being struck with a screamer of a line drive that ricocheted off his right foot. And less than 24 hours later Boston has placed Wright on the 10-day injured list with a right toe contusion.

The newly-acquired Andrew Cashner will take Wright's spot on the 25-man roster, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic understands.

Saturday's implosion has literally been a summary of Wright's work ever since being recently reinstated on the back of serving his 80-game PED suspension. The 34-year-old knuckleballer has posted a dreadful 8.53 ERA to go with an astronomically-high 2.368 WHIP in six appearances for the Sox in 2019.

Exchanging Wright for Cashner, of course, gives Boston a shorter bullpen, but Alex Cora's compilation of relievers have been abominable all season long.

And with Nathan Eovaldi likely returning next week to join the Red Sox bullpen, Cora may be hoping that Cashner could provide some stability at the back-end of the rotation.
