Red Sox Reportedly Interviewed John Gibbons for Manager Position
By Brendan Balsamo
John Gibbons was not in Major League Baseball in 2019. After two managerial stints with the Toronto Blue Jays -- the last one ending after the 2018 season -- Gibbons has yet to return to the game as he continues to look for the right fit.
There's a slim chance he could return for 2020, however, as according to Ken Rosenthal, the Boston Red Sox interviewed him for their recently vacated managerial position.
Things have not been going well for the Sox recently. They're not only being investigated for alleged sign stealing during their 2018 season, but their manager, Alex Cora, was involved in the 2017 Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal and was fired as he awaits punishment from the MLB. Oh yeah, and the team's blockbuster trade involving Mookie Betts and David Price still hasn't officially gone through due to a number of issues.
As for Gibbons, he had a very successful second stint with the Blue Jays. After his first stretch with the team from 2004-2008, the team rehired him in 2013, and reached the ALCS for the first time since 1993, and did so in back-to-back seasons (2015, 2016).
It's been rumored that the Red Sox have already decided internally to give Ron Roenicke the manager job, but with the way things are going for them as of late, we can't rule out a last-minute change.
