Red Sox Reportedly Sign Jhoulys Chacin to Minor-League Deal
By Ryan Giglio
The beleaguered Boston Red Sox pitching staff may soon get some help as the team tries to climb its way into a Wild Card spot.
Boston is reportedly signing veteran Jhoulys Chacin to a minor-league deal after the former Brewer threw a bullpen session in front of Red Sox brass.
Chacin was designated by Milwaukee earlier this week after pitching to a 5.79 ERA over 88.2 innings in 19 starts this season. This rough campaign comes after Chacin went 15-8 with a 3.50 ERA in 2018 as one of the better starters on the division-winning Brewers squad.
Boston won't be expecting Chacin to contribute immediately, since the 31-year-old was on the injured list with a lat strain at the time of his release. However, he is expected to return in mid-September ,and will most likely join the team when rosters expand.
The Red Sox currently sit five games out of a Wild Card spot and need their pitching staff to pitch much better in the season's final month. Although Chris Sale is done for the year, David Price is expected to return on Sunday.
Chacin won't replace Sale's production or save Boston's season, but he has a history of being a reliable big league starter. Right now, the Red Sox could surely use guys like that.
