Red Sox Reportedly 'Unlikely' to Land Edwin Diaz, Shane Greene, or Raisel Iglesias in Relief Chase
By Adam Weinrib
The surging Boston Red Sox need plenty of relief help in their repeat bid, but it appears, as the deadline nears, that they won't be getting any of it from the biggest names in the market.
Per reports emerging one day before the deadline, the defending champs are now unlikely to nab Mets closer Edwin Diaz, someone they'd previously been considered favorites for.
Additionally, you can apparently count them out on Shane Greene and Raisel Iglesias, too; the Tigers and Reds must be asking too much for their coveted assets.
Boston's surge ahead of the deadline has been somewhat hard to parse; their offense remains completely alive, and they've done plenty of 2018-esque damage. Their starting rotation has rounded into form a bit, sans Chris Sale, which still seems to make little-to-no sense. The past weekend's bashing of the Yankees was phenomenal, and keeps Boston in the race, but... the team can't help but feel slightly disappointed they weren't able to complete a semi-guaranteed sweep that was right on the table for them, only gaining two games.
Dave Dombrowski needs to improve the bullpen (always). But if it took major league talent like Michael Chavis to get Diaz and other top-end guys (which seems like), he's much wiser to target underrated arms like Scott Oberg.
