Red Sox Radio Personality Starts Rumor Theo Epstein Was Spotted in Boston Sunday
By Jerry Trotta
It's been a little less than three weeks since the Boston Red Sox altered MLB's landscape by firing president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, less than a year removed from an historic title-winning campaign. The club still remains without a permanent general manager, and most reports suggest that their search is still in its inception.
Well, a rumor formulated Tuesday night by Red Sox radio personality Lou Merloni claimed that current Chicago Cubs GM (and former Boston GM) Theo Epstein was seen in Beantown on Sunday, while his club was finishing off getting swept in a four-game series at Wrigley Field at the hands of the Cardinals.
Could a reunion be in the works behind the scenes?
Epstein, of course, was the Red Sox general manager for a decade from 2002-2011, during which he constructed a roster that won a pair of World Series in '04 and '07, thereby neutralizing the Curse of the Bambino -- the 86-year span following 1918 where Boston failed to win a World Series.
After that feat, however, Epstein left for the Windy City, where he built a a core of players that hoisted the Commissioners Trophy in 2016, promptly ending the longest WS drought (108 years) in MLB history. The man knows what he's doing.
However, his Cubbies have underwhelmed significantly since that triumph, and they appear to be moving on from that core after their collapse across the last two weeks. It might just be time for a change of scenery for the 45-year-old exec. Why not return to the place where you became a household name in the baseball industry?
It's worth reiterating that this narrative is nothing but a glorified rumor at this stage, but we can't ignore the fact that the door is more than open for a homecoming.
Stay tuned for updates, folks.
