Red Sox Star Xander Bogaerts is Ticked off With the MLB All-Star Voting Process
By Sean Facey
The MLB All-Star vote has long frustrated some fans for the simple fact that some players end up in the Midsummer Classic based on ballot-stuffing rather than their actual merits.
That frustration now seems to have reached the players, specifically Xander Bogaerts, who's none too happy with the current state of the voting process.
"These past few years, every time I’ve come up just short even though my numbers have been up there or better than most of the guys, [who make it]" Bogaerts said. "It’s kind of getting annoying."
He's justified in being upset. He leads all shortstops with 3.4 fWAR on the season, and also leads AL shortstops in home runs, runs batted in and on-base percentage. He's also second in wRC+, wOBA and OPS.
The Red Sox star has consistently been one of the best at his position in all of baseball over the last few years, yet he has just one All-Star appearance to his credit. He's nowhere close to making it in this year either, ranking sixth in the voting as of the latest update.
Part of the onus falls on Red Sox fans for not cramming the ballot box like the other fanbases across the league, but that doesn't mean Bogaerts should go unrewarded.
The voting process has robbed him of some well-deserved recognition. It's only natural that he's upset about it.
