The Boston Red Sox unquestionably did right by hiring the former Vice President of Baseball Operations of the Tampa Bay Rays, Chaim Bloom, as their new head decision-maker.

Now that the appropriate amount of time has been allowed for members of the baseball community to applaud Bloom's appointment, it's time for him to get down to business, as he has a lot of pressing issues to address.

J.D. Martinez, as we know, has the right to opt out of the remaining three years and $62 million on his contract. The Red Sox apparently aren't going to jump the gun on their All-Star's contract talks, remaining reluctant to offer the All-Star DH a new deal or a restructuring.

Martinez has five days following the conclusion of the World Series to announce his decision, and, as things currently stand, Boston seems to have zero formal idea as to where he is leaning.

John Henry, the club's principal owner, acknowledged that the Red Sox haven't at all pushed to offer the 32-year-old slugger a new contract.

"It hasn't changed," said Henry. "I don't know what they (Martinez and agent Scott Boras) are thinking. We will find out very soon."

If Martinez were to opt out, Boston could extend a qualifying offer his way to ensure that the team he signs for would have to promptly cough up a compensatory draft pick in return.

As of now, it seems like Martinez and Boras are keeping any potential significant revelations in house. Red Sox devotees will just have to remain patient to see if their stud DH will be returning to Beantown.
