Red Sox Top Prospect Jarren Duran is Literally Hitting .422 and We Should Talk About That Insanity
By Sean Facey
Hidden deep within the Boston Red Sox farm system is arguably the best hitting prospect in all of baseball.
Yes, we're talking pure, good old fashioned hitting.
Red Sox No. 10 overall prospect Jarren Duran came into this season with acclaim for his polished bat, and it's paid off; he's hitting .422 and deserves far more recognition than he's getting.
Boston's top outfield prospect from High-A Salem leads all minor league players in batting average, and it's not even close. The next closest qualified batter, Mason McCoy, is hitting .385, almost 40 points behind Duran.
A seventh-round draft pick from 2018, he's done nothing but hit since he was selected. Across all levels, he's slashing a ridiculous .382/.429/.535 in 497 plate appearances.
In an otherwise barren farm system, Duran stands out as a potential steal. Key to his success since he was selected last year has been his game-changing speed. Some unofficial times put him in well within the vicinity of MLB speedsters Billy Hamilton and Dee Gordon.
In addition to his ridiculous batting average, his 16 steals on the year rank third-most in the minors.
He's played so well this year that the team's president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, went down to Salem to watch him play.
Very rarely does a player with Duran's combination of consistent contact and elite speed come along.
Duran is an extremely exciting player who deserves far more recognition than he's getting. If he keeps hitting at this rate, he'll be in the majors in no time at all.
Whether that's for Boston or as an elite trade pieces is yet to be seen.
