Reds Deal Starter Tanner Roark to A's
By Adam Weinrib
The Oakland A's have gone out and secured the exact type of pitcher we knew they would obtain, and it's hard not to believe in this acquisition succeeding.
About an hour and a half before the deadline, the team's adding Tanner Roark, most recently of Cincinnati, to aid in their Wild Card chase (they currently hold the second spot, albeit in a tie).
In 110.1 innings pitched this year, Roark, often thought of as a soft-tosser, has whiffed 108 batters in efficient fashion. Roark is simply so normal that he's become underrated (once again, that's Oakland A's material right there).
Roark posted exceptional seasons for the Nationals in both 2014 (15-10, 2.85) and 2016 (16-10, 2.83, 10th in the NL Cy Young voting), and is having his most consistent season since then this year, though his FIP is right in line with his ERA (4.20 to 4.24). That makes it clear he's handled his own business well, under the confines of a hitters park in Cincy.
In return, the Reds will receive 21-year-old A's outfield prospect Jameson Hannah.
Hannah is ranked as the A's eighth-ranked prospect, so this is a decent return for the Reds considering his age and potential.
The A's just keep continue building the cost-conscious rotation of Billy Beane's dreams.
