Reds' Michael Lorenzen Joins Babe Ruth in Baseball Lore With Incredible Performance vs Phillies
By Scott Rogust
A bit of rare baseball history was made on Wednesday night.
Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Michael Lorenzen entered in the seventh inning against the Philadelphia Phillies. In his short appearance, Lorenzen hit a home run, got the win, and played in the field. He's now the second player ever to accomplish the feat.
The other player? Baseball legend Babe Ruth, who did so in 1921.
Not bad company to be a part of.
Lorenzen entered the game in the top of the seventh inning with a 5-4 lead at his disposal. The reliever didn't have an ideal start, as he surrendered a game-tying, solo home run to Phillies slugger Jay Bruce.
With Cincinnati retaking the lead, Lorenzen stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning, and hit a two-run bomb to left field off Phillies pitcher Blake Parker to give the Reds a 8-5 lead.
To complete the trifecta, Lorenzen was shifted out to center field in the top of the ninth inning as manager David Bell brought in closer Raisel Iglesias. It was an easy night in the outfield for Lorenzen, as he had zero fielding opportunities.
Lorenzen will forever be linked to "The Babe" for the rest of his career, and that's something nobody can ever take away from him.
