Reds Nab Freddy Galvis From Blue Jays in Waiver Claim
By Michael Luciano
It's not every day that a guy in the middle of the best offensive season of his career gets put on waivers, but that's exactly what happened with former Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Freddy Galvis.
Now that the Blue Jays are fully committed to their next generation infield that features Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Cavan Biggio (they're 9-5 since Bichette's promotion), Galvis was out of a starting spot and was waived.
He didn't last long on the waiver wire, however, as the Cincinnati Reds were able to snatch him up.
Galvis, who made his name as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, is hitting .267, which is the highest mark of his career, while also knocking out 18 home runs and posting a career-high OPS+ of 96.
It remains unclear how Galvis will fit into the crowded infield of Eugenio Suarez, Jose Iglesias, and Jose Peraza, but the Reds decided his offensive production was too enticing to pass up.
The Reds stand just five games out of a Wild Card spot all of a sudden, and Galvis could be that final piece they need to pick up a couple of wins here and there to inch them ever closer to the playoffs.
