Reds Sign Brad Boxberger to Minor-League Contract
By Scott Rogust
The Cincinnati Reds have added some veteran pitching depth to their organization.
According to C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic, the Reds have signed pitcher Brad Boxberger to a minor-league contract on Tuesday.
Ironically, Boxberger now returns to the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft.
Boxberger started this season as a member of the Kansas City Royals. In 29 appearances with the Royals, Boxberger compiled a less-than-desirable 5.40 ERA, along with a 27:17 strikeout/walk ratio. As a result, the Royals released him from his contract on July 1.
The veteran right-hander signed a minor-league deal with the Washington Nationals in recent weeks, a team in desperate need of bullpen depth. Despite allowing just one run over 8.2 innings of work in Double-A Harrisburg, the Nationals released him over the weekend, after adding Daniel Hudson, Roenis Elias, and Hunter Strickland at the trade deadline.
The Cincinnati Reds remain in the thick of the NL Central divisional race (somehow), as they enter Tuesday night 7.5 games out of first place. If Brad Boxberger impresses in the minors, we may very well see him don a Reds uniform for the first time in his career.
