Reds Trade Former All-Star 2B Scooter Gennett to Giants
By Michael Luciano
After making his first All-Star Game appearance in 2018, Cincinnati Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett has struggled to work his way back from a groin injury and has been leapfrogged by Jose Iglesias, Derek Dietrich, and Jose Peraza in the Reds' infield.
Now, the San Francisco Giants have swooped in and acquired Gennett with the hopes of helping him rediscover his power stroke.
After four unremarkable years in Milwaukee, Gennett exploded offensively as a Red, with his best season to date coming in 2018, a year in which he hit .310 with 23 home runs, 92 RBIs, and a 125 OPS+.
In 2019, Gennett has looked lost at the plate, hitting just .212 with only 5 RBIs in 20 games.
While Gennett's struggles this year don't exactly scream "impact deadline acquisition," maybe the change of scenery and Oracle Park's inviting right field fence could help the lefty pull-hitter get back to swatting home runs.
San Francisco could still use some more thump in their lineup, and Cincinnati had a logjam of middle infielders, so this deal makes sense for both sides at face value. If Scooter turns back into 2018 Scooter, this is a whole different story.
