VIDEO: Trevor Bauer Continues Criticism of New MLB Playoff Format in Spot-on Rant
By Michael Luciano
The MLB's idea to pump a little juice into the postseason, which involves a 14-team playoff beginning in 2022, and a "reality show" in which the highest seeds pick the opponents that they want to play, sounds exciting in theory, but makes little to no sense in practice. Cincinnati Reds starter Trevor Bauer, who has long run afoul of the MLB due to his willingness to take on commissioner Rob Manfred, joined in the chorus of dissenters on his "Momentum" YouTube channel. Bauer outlined the multitude of challenges that the league would have in implementing this proposal.
Bauer's rant, which didn't even cover all of the potential problems, is entirely spot on. What is the No. 1 seed supposed to do for nearly two weeks while the rest of the chaos in the early rounds sorts itself out?
The week-long layoff works in football because the extra week is needed for rest and recuperation. For baseball, it would just throw pitching staffs totally out of whack. The "reality show" element of it is just as silly as it sounds.
On top of the fact that there just aren't 14 playoff-caliber teams in this league, this whole idea smacks of a bunch of disconnected executives trying to outthink themselves and reinvent the wheel. This isn't the NBA or NFL, and Bauer is on the money when he claims this format has no chance of success. There are changes to be made around baseball, but this is certainly not the way to do it.
