3 Contract Extensions the Redskins Need to Prioritize

Despite a 3-13 finish last season, it's easy to see that the Washington Redskins are on the come-up. The appointment of head coach Ron Rivera was a tremendous hire, and they further upgraded their talented young roster with an impressive showing in the NFL Draft, which was highlighted by the selection of Ohio State defensive end Chase Young at No. 2 overall.

Now that quarterback Dwayne Haskins is finally presented with a HC that's keen on aiding his development, don't be surprised if the Redskins ruffle some feathers in 2020. However, even though the future is bright in DC, that outlook could turn on its head if the franchise doesn't ink these players to extensions in the near future.

3. Chase Roullier

The Redskins have an intriguing young core of offensive linemen and center Chase Roullier figures to be a fixture of that group for years to come. The 2017 sixth-rounder has played 94.5% of the snaps across the last two seasons and is one of the most mobile players at his position. With his rookie contract set to expire after the upcoming campaign, we'd be shocked if Washington hasn't already started discussions about a potential extension with the 26-year-old stud.

2. Matthew Ioannidis

Yes, Matthew Ioannidis is technically under contract until 2022. However, his current deal contains a potential out after the upcoming season and we fully expect that the 26-year-old defensive lineman will use that as leverage to earn a new contract if he posts more stud-like numbers. Over the last two years, the 2016 fifth-round pick has recorded 95 tackles, 16 sacks and 27 QB hits. For context, Ioannidis is slated to bank a grand total of $15.85 million over the next three seasons. That's ridiculous for a player of his caliber, so expect the Redskins to offer him a new-and-improved contract before long.

1. Brandon Scherff

It was speculated for a large portion of the NFL offseason that Brandon Scherff would be playing elsewhere in 2020. However, the Redskins ultimately hit him with the non-exclusive franchise tag, which will keep him in DC for at least one more season. The way we see it, Washington should do whatever it takes to prevent the three-time Pro Bowler from testing the open market. Scherff is widely regarded as one of the best guards the league has to offer, and he could be an integral component of a Redskins team that could make serious noise in the coming years. Agreeing to a contract extension with the 28-year-old star will ensure that happens.
