Redskins RB Derrius Guice Seeking 2nd Opinion on Knee and Could Undergo Meniscus Surgery
By Karl Rasmussen
Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice's NFL career has not gotten off to the start that he nor the franchise had been hoping for. After missing his entire rookie year with a torn ACL, Guice picked up another knock during the offseason, but was ultimately able to suit up in Week 1.
Unfortunately, it was revealed the 22-year-old had suffered yet another injury during the season opener, as Jay Gruden revealed that the former LSU star was dealing with a meniscus issue.
While the second-year back was not expected to require surgery, he's reportedly set to meet with Dr. James Andrews and seek a second opinion. Should Andrews deem surgery necessary, Guice would undergo the knife as soon as Thursday.
As Adam Schefter notes, the surgery would cost Guice 4-6 weeks of action, a huge loss for the Redskins offense which planned to use him as a feature back. The lack of progress in Guice's recovery was cause for concern, so addressing the setback early could lead to a quicker turnaround, getting the player back out on the field by mid-season.
In his NFL debut, Guice logged 10 carries for just 18 yards and hauled in 3 receptions for 20 yards.
With Guice likely hitting the shelf, the Redskins plan to utilize Adrian Peterson as their lead back, with Chris Thompson anticipated to feature in the passing game. AP was a healthy scratch in Week 1, but we'll see just what the vet has left in the tank when he takes the spotlight against the Cowboys.
