Redskins-Panthers Kyle Allen Trade is Bad News for Dwayne Haskins and Cam Newton
By Scott Rogust
The Washington Redskins have made a trade with the Carolina Panthers for a quarterback. Redskins fans, please welcome...Kyle Allen?
That's right, Washington opted to trade a fifth-round pick in exchange for the 24-year-old Allen on Monday afternoon. This is not only bad news for Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins, but Allen's former teammate in Cam Newton.
Many expected Newton to be on the move, considering the Panthers placed him on the trading block last week in favor of signing Teddy Bridgewater. In fact, rumors began floating that the Redskins were the favorites to land Newton, whether it was via trade or free agency signing. Now, yet another destination can be crossed off Newton's list of landing spots, considering the lack of available starting quarterback jobs available right now.
Now, onto Haskins. As is the case with any new head coach, they want to bring in their preferred quarterback, rather than inherit one that's already on the roster. Redskins head coach Ron Rivera showed his hand at the NFL Scouting Combine, by announcing that he would interview quarterback prospects Joe Burrow and Tua Tagoavailoa.
Haskins had to already be sitting on pins and needles after hearing that from his new head coach. And now he watches as Rivera brings his former quarterback from Carolina to DC, where he'll likely compete for the starting job. Even though team owner Dan Snyder pounded on the table to select Haskins in last year's NFL Draft, he needs to appease Rivera, who has a lot power within the organization after agreeing to take the Redskins job in the first place. Forming such a rapport during this outbreak isn't easy.
In one fell swoop, Allen not only ended one man's chance for success on paper, but two. 2020, you're officially weird.
