Redskins Unwisely Plan to Use Ex-Giant Ereck Flowers at LT Amid Trent Williams' Holdout
By Sean Facey
The Washington Redskins and seven-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Trent Williams still appear to be on incredibly sour terms. Williams has engaged in a holdout over how the team's medical staff has handled his injuries, and it could be a long time until the two sides come to an understanding.
In the meantime, the Redskins plan to use former New York Giants lineman Ereck Flowers at left tackle until Williams returns.
To say that it would be a downgrade would be a gross understatement. Flowers' time with the Giants was a massive disappointment. He allowed 18 sacks in 51 games with the team and was tagged for 28 penalties. His short stint with the Jaguars was only marginally better.
Head coach Jay Gruden and the Redskins had hopes of moving the former ninth overall pick to a guard position, but without Williams, they don't have the flexibility to do that.
With Flowers in at left tackle, it'll be tough for the team to guarantee blindside protection for whoever's in at quarterback, be it Case Keenum or rookie prospect Dwayne Haskins.
They'd better hope they can hammer out a deal that's satisfying enough for Williams for him to come back to the team soon.
If they don't, Redskins quarterbacks might be in for a long, grueling season filled with trepidation about what might be lurking outside of their view.
