Redskins Hustling to Re-Sign Brandon Scherff Before Franchise Tag Deadline

The NFL's franchise tag deadline is less than a week away, and that has left plenty of teams scrambling to try and extend stars who are eligible to receive the tag.

One of those teams is the Washington Redskins. The middling NFC East team is reportedly trying somewhat aggressively to lock up star offensive guard Brandon Scherff to a new deal before the clock strikes 4 p.m. on March 12.

Since he entered the league, Scherff has been on of the most dominant players at his position. The former fifth overall pick has yet to allow more than five sacks in a single season, and he has been called for just 21 total holding and false start penalties over his five-year career.

Though he hasn't appeared in a full 16 games since 2016, the fact remains that he's a true difference-maker along on the offensive line. The best outcome for all parties would be to figure out a contract extension and avoid any awkward conversations about the franchise tag.

After missing out on the Pro Bowl in 2018, the 28-year-old was selected to go to his third such event this past season. He's shown plenty of signs that he can be a reliable guard despite his injury problems.

Time is ticking for the Redskins, though. Their window of opportunity to sign Scherff long-term before having to apply the tag is waning fast, and if they can't get a deal done soon, they're going to have to make a some tough decisions.
