VIDEO: Remembering Mike Gundy's Legendary 'I'm a Man, I'm 40' Meltdown
By Michael Luciano
A day after a 49-45 win over Texas Tech is not the time you would expect Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy to be inconsolably angry, but a column in a local newspaper that took aim at one of his quarterbacks got him all riled up. After Gundy made a quarterback change that saw Bobby Reid sent to the bench, a column that further took shots at Reid's attitude struck a nerve with Gundy. He famously called the newspaper garbage, before reminding everyone that he is indeed a man who is 40 years old.
Gundy's anger was directed at columnist Jenni Carlson, as she wrote a column that questioned if Reid was benched because of what she felt was a poor attitude and allegedly not gutting out injuries rather than his play.
Gundy, who virulently asserted that Reid "did everything right," took aim at what he thought was character assassination of a young player.
Gundy, a former Oklahoma State quarterback, might have won 129 games over his 15 years in charge in Stillwater, but the mullet-sporting head coach's name will always be associated with this flamboyant press conference.
Gundy has helped the Cowboys keep pace with the rest of the big boys in the Big 12, but ever Oklahoma State fan will instantly think of his legendary rant when his name is brought up 20 years down the line.
