Remembering the Wild Aaron Hernandez Arrest 7 Years Ago Today
By Scott Rogust
As it pertains to serious legal issues in the sports world -- specifically in the NFL -- two stand out: OJ Simpson's arrest in 1994, and the more recent incident involving then-New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.
On this day seven years ago, Hernandez was arrested for the murder of Odin Lloyd.
Lloyd's body was found at an industrial site approximately half a mile away from Hernandez's home in Attleborough, Mass. by a jogger on June 17, 2013. Upon investigation, police saw that Lloyd was shot execution-style. Hernandez's name entered the investigation after Lloyd's family said that the two were friends and had seen each other the day prior to his body being discovered.
Nearly two weeks later, Hernandez was shown being led out of his home in handcuffs. The Patriots, who signed the tight end to a $40 million contract extension the year prior, cut ties with Hernandez that day.
On April 15, 2015, Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Two years later, Hernandez was found dead in his jail cell by corrections officers in Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Lancaster, Mass. Hernandez's death was officially ruled a suicide by hanging in an official autopsy performed by a medical examiner.
The sports world was stunned by Hernandez's arrest seven years ago because he was such a promising athlete during his three years with the Patriots. But his football career was marred by the reprehensible actions off the field.
