Reports Detailing Potential Mammoth Contract Extension for Eagles QB Carson Wentz Surface
By Jerry Trotta
The Philadelphia Eagles' commitment to Carson Wentz became apparent when they allowed Super Bowl-winning backup Nick Foles to walk in free agency and sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Though the former MVP candidate has dealt with a considerable number of injuries throughout his three years in the league, Philly is reportedly keen on signing Wentz to a lucrative deal despite the fact that the franchise has picked up the QB's fifth-year option for 2020.
CBS Sports quoted Adam Schefter on Wednesday saying that Wentz and the Eagles "have begun talking" and will "get a deal in place" before the 2019 season. Via an unnamed source, CBS Sports added that a deal could be done as soon as this summer and that the annual average value could reach a predicted $30 million.
According to that source, the potential contract will top Kirk Cousins' three-year, $84 million deal but fall south of Russell Wilson's four-year, $140 million deal, based on AAV.
The former North Dakota State star is set to make $8.4 million in 2019, good for the No. 22 spot among all quarterbacks. And under his fifth-year option, he'll rake in $22.7 million, which would propel him to just outside the top 10.
If these reports hold true, however, it appears that Wentz is just months away from becoming one of the NFL's highest-paid gunslingers.
It's fair to say that escalated a lot sooner than we originally anticipated.
